The Caryota mitis, also known as the fishtail palm, is a species of plant that naturally occurs in the tropical climate of Southeast Asia. This species is native to countries such as India, Malaysia, and the Philippines.
The Caryota mitis is a unique palm with its feathered leaves striking due to their unusual shape. The leaves are segmented and each segment takes the form of a fish tail, which is fairly unique in the palm world.
The care of the Caryota mitis requires a warm and humid environment, reflecting its natural habitat. It requires a lot of light, but direct sunlight can damage the leaves.
The soil must be watered regularly and never allowed to dry out completely. This makes it a plant that requires intensive care, better suited for experienced plant carers.
Care Instructions
- Enjoys bright indirect light. Position near a window or skylight but not in direct strong sunlight as this can cause damage to the leaves (indicated by brown spotting or drooping leaves)
- Likes moist but not over-watered soil. Wait to water until top few inches of compost becomes fully dry. Brown leaf tips indicate over-watering.
- Keep away from air conditioning units or any source of direct heat as this can dry out the soil.
- Fertilise 3 times per year to maintain growth
